Natural Dyes 101 – 3-Hour Class

Step into the world of color straight from nature with our Natural Dyes 101 workshop. In this 3-hour session, you’ll explore the fundamentals of natural dyeing using plants, roots, bugs, and even a little chemistry magic to create a vibrant spectrum of color on textiles.

Class Highlights:

  • Dye vs. Pigment: Learn the difference between dyes and pigments, and discover why not all flowers make great dye (but they’re still pretty).

  • Color Chemistry: Watch real-time color transformations as we shift pH and explore the science behind washfastness and lightfastness.

  • Make & Dip: Prepare a living indigo vat, create your own mini dye baths using weld, madder, cochineal, and logwood, and experiment with folding techniques to add pattern and resist.

  • Take-Home Textiles: Leave with your own naturally dyed textiles — colorful reminders of your day immersed in botanical color.

Perfect for curious beginners or anyone looking to deepen their creative practice, this hands-on workshop includes all materials, plenty of demos, and lots of time to play. Come ready to mix, dip, fold, and fall in love with nature’s palette.
